Red Sox Face Crucial Offseason Payroll Decisions Ahead of GM Meetings

Red Sox Face Crucial Offseason Payroll Decisions Ahead of GM Meetings

November 8, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

On Monday, thirty heads of baseball operations head to Las Vegas for the annual General Manager Meetings, arriving with a pressing agenda as an impending industry lockout looms on December 2. Unlike most offseasons where these gatherings merely lay the groundwork for later deals, executives face a compressed window for face-to-face negotiations under a cloud of economic uncertainty.

The Red Sox enter the meetings in a solid foundational position after reaching the playoffs in 2026. The club expects to return virtually its entire position player core alongside a top-tier pitching staff. Boston anticipates getting Garrett Crochet and Roman Anthony back from injuries that cost them most of last season, while also integrating Curtis Mead, a trade deadline acquisition whose debut was derailed by a fluke injury.

Despite these roster strengths, Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow faces a delicate balancing act regarding payroll. A contributor who tracks team finances estimated the Red Sox’s payroll at $268.42 million, pushing Boston over the Competitive Balance Tax threshold for the second consecutive year.

The upcoming labor expiration complicates financial projections. Exceeding the CBT multiple seasons in a row triggers heavier penalties, though it remains unclear whether those multipliers will apply to 2027 once a new collective bargaining agreement is finalized. The first CBT threshold sat at $244 million last season. With minimal money coming off the books—veteran right-hander Sonny Gray and his $21 million salary represent one of the team’s only major free agents—Boston’s projected 2027 payroll sits at approximately $267 million once arbitration raises are factored in.

Breslow addressed the team’s strategy leading up to the deadline in an interview with MassLive.com’s Sean McAdam. “If we try to operate as though we know exactly where this is going to land, the one thing I feel confident is that we will be wrong. It’s probably best to just make prudent decisions under the current framework,” Breslow told McAdam. He added that the team is focusing simply on filling roster holes rather than crafting strategies for an uncertain economic future.

The league’s latest proposal pushes the implementation of a salary cap to 2028 at the earliest, initially setting that cap at $258.2 million. That timeline gives teams breathing room, allowing Boston time to prepare for potential future payroll reductions while maintaining a competitive roster for 2027. Breslow expressed confidence in ownership backing when pursuing roster upgrades, noting that support has been consistent.

To create financial flexibility, the club could target several areas for savings ahead of the November 20 tender deadline. Outfielder Jarren Duran is a prime candidate for a non-tender or trade if the team seeks to clear salary and open a spot for a left fielder or designated hitter. Other arbitration-eligible players facing potential non-tender decisions include Kutter Crawford, Connor Wong, Romy Gonzalez, Andruw Monasterio, and Jahmai Jones.

Veterans under long-term deals also present trade possibilities. Masataka Yoshida is due to make $18 million in 2027 as he enters the final year of his contract. Battling injuries and limited to a contact-hitting role, Yoshida occupies the designated hitter spot, complicating efforts to add a major middle-of-the-order bat. Trevor Story is due $23.33 million entering his age-36 season after being limited to 64 games, leaving his status as the starting shortstop open to evaluation with top prospect Franklin Arias waiting in the system.

When addressing roster needs through acquisition, Breslow must weigh the trade market against free agency. Free agent second baseman Brandon Lowe is among the top power bats available on the market this winter.
