Red Bull Basement winner puts Agri-Tech in the spotlight

Entrepreneur’s Journey: From Idea to Impact in Silicon Valley

A budding entrepreneur from the Philippines transformed his concept into a real-world business after an immersive trip to California. The experience boosted his confidence and broadened his perspective on his innovative agricultural project, AgriConnect.

A Transformative Trip

After arriving in California, Soj Gamayon was determined to make the most of his opportunities. His AgriConnect idea uses artificial intelligence to help farmers identify potential crop threats. The journey positively impacted his views on his startup and himself.

“What this trip has meant to me is that I’m actually a risk taker!” says the student entrepreneur. “And I think that’s always going to be something I learned about myself and that maybe changed me as a person.”

Key Interactions and Mentorship

The adventure started in Los Angeles, then concluded in Silicon Valley. There, Gamayon met with Hans Yang, head of Microsoft for Startups. Yang had served as a judge at the Red Bull Basement World Final. Yang provided a tour of the University of Southern California’s Iovine and Young Academy.

“The highlight of my time at Red Bull Basement in Tokyo was watching founders go from an idea to a real business.”

Silicon Valley Summit

In Silicon Valley, Gamayon attended the Plug and Play Summit. He networked with attendees and pitched AgriConnect. He spent two weeks with mentors from Plug and Play. These sessions were custom-tailored to Gamayon’s needs.

Gamayon shared that he was initially worried about the summit. However, he eventually realized his place there. His mentors reminded him he won the Red Bull Basement, and his project put Agri-Tech in the spotlight.

“For the two weeks ahead of the Summit, basically every day I had a two-hour session with different Plug and Play mentors. Everything was curated according to where I am right now – a pre-product startup – and also to the industry I’m in, which is Agriculture,” Gamayon shares.

Looking Ahead

Gamayon’s immediate plans include producing and testing a minimum viable product. He’s also in talks with potential partners in the Philippines. His long-term goal involves expanding AgriConnect’s offerings to cover various crops.
