Rector Uaeméx Postpones Meeting with Medical Students

UAEMéx Rector Postpones Meeting wiht Striking Medical Students Amidst Security Concerns

The Rector of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (Uaeméx), Martha patricia Zarza Delgado, has postponed a scheduled work table with striking students from the Faculty of medicine. The meeting, initially set for Friday at 9 a.m., was canceled after the Rector received an email alleging that the gathering would include individuals from other academic departments and that she would be pressured to sign a document. The anonymous email, which was shared with the medical students, stated that “nearby faculties are ready in case it is required to react and that they will not give up the strike if they do not sign, and complies with the agreements in August.” It further claimed that while an invitation was extended for the meeting, not all attendees would be from the Faculty of Medicine, and they would not be open to dialog.

rector Zarza Delgado communicated this decision to the striking students via email late Thursday, citing the potential risk and the unsuitability for dialogue. She proposed rescheduling the session for a new date and time to be agreed upon with Dr. Sandra Galván Mares. The Student Assembly of the UAEMéx Faculty of Medicine publicly shared the Rector’s email and their response on social media. They refuted the claims made in the alleged student’s email, stating it lacked veracity and representativeness. The assembly clarified that their meeting was not influenced by external interests or actors outside their community, and that the invitation was open to the entire university student body, in full exercise of their rights to institution, participation, and dialogue.
