Record-Warm Winter: US Temperatures 7.6°F Above Average

March 1, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

The winter of 2025-2026 saw record-breaking temperatures across the United States, with the average temperature reaching 40.7 degrees Fahrenheit – 7.6 degrees above normal, according to data released by the National Weather Service (NWS).

The unusually warm winter followed a January 31 – February 1, 2026, winter storm that impacted parts of the country, as reported by the NWS. Whereas the storm brought typical winter weather to some regions, the overall seasonal temperature trend remained significantly elevated.

Notably, Texas experienced its hottest winter temperature on record this past Thursday, according to The Weather Channel. This extreme warmth occurred despite the recent winter storm and contributes to the broader pattern of above-average temperatures observed nationwide.

The NWS has also released specific outlooks for regions like Southeastern North Carolina and Northeastern South Carolina, detailing expected conditions for the remainder of the winter season. These outlooks, like the national overview, indicate a continuation of warmer-than-average temperatures.

The NWS continues to monitor weather patterns and provide updated forecasts as the winter season progresses.
