Record Heatwave Sweeps Across US West & Central Plains – March Temperatures Soar

March 22, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Record-breaking temperatures sweeping across the western United States are now extending into the central part of the country, bringing unseasonably warm conditions to areas that experienced freezing temperatures just a week ago. The surge in heat has prompted extreme heat alerts and elevated fire risk warnings across multiple states.

Dozens of cities, from California to Colorado, have registered record high temperatures for the month of March, according to the National Weather Service. On Saturday, Kansas City, Missouri, and North Platte, Nebraska, both set modern March temperature records, reaching 33.3°C (91.9°F). This rapid warming follows a period of unusually cold weather; Chanute, Kansas, for example, experienced a low of -10.5°C (13.1°F) on March 16th, only to reach 32.8°C (91°F) just four days later.

The heat wave peaked on Friday, with temperatures soaring to 44.4°C (111.9°F) in areas along the California-Arizona border, establishing a new national record for the month of March. The National Weather Service continued extreme heat alerts for these desert regions on Saturday, alongside high fire risk warnings for much of Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma.

Millions of Americans are experiencing temperatures exceeding seasonal averages by more than 17°C (30°F). A report from World Weather Attribution (WWA), a group of international scientists, concluded that such a heat wave would have been “virtually impossible at this time of year in a world without climate change.”

The California National Historic Trail, spanning portions of ten states including Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska, highlights the historical challenges of traversing the region. The trail commemorates the journey of over 250,000 emigrants traveling to California during the 1840s and 1850s, a period marked by extreme weather conditions. The National Park Service maintains several sites in Colorado, including Amache, a former Japanese American incarceration site, and Bent’s Old Fort, a reconstructed 1840s trading post along the Santa Fe Trail.

The United States consists of 50 states, a federal district (Washington, D.C.), five major territories, and minor islands, each with unique geographical and climatic conditions. The current heat wave underscores the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events across the country.
