Record Fuel Prices Cost Dutch Drivers Over 1,500 Euros Annually
September marked the most expensive month ever recorded at the fuel pump in the Netherlands, with average annual gasoline costs surging past 1,500 euros per motorist.
Record Pump Prices Drive Up Annual Fuel Bills
Data compiled by AutoZoWeg.nl revealed that Dutch motorists spent an average of 1,550 euros annually on gasoline during September, representing a 321 euro increase compared to the previous year. A liter of Euro95 cost an average of 2,45 euros throughout the month, up from 1,94 euros a year earlier. According to CBS figures cited by Metronieuws.nl, this marks the highest monthly average since the start of daily price tracking in 2006. Market analysts attribute the escalating costs to higher crude oil prices driven by geopolitical conflict surrounding Iran and supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.
Vehicle Models Dictate Wide Variations in Annual Costs
The financial impact varies significantly depending on the specific vehicle model driven. Analysis of RDW vehicle registration data combined with CBS mileage averages of 10,775 kilometers per year showed that a small Peugeot 108 costs approximately 1,125 euros annually in fuel. The Volkswagen Polo, the most common gasoline model in the selection, accumulates a yearly fuel bill of 1,430 euros. Higher-end models register substantially greater expenses, with the Volkswagen Golf reaching 1,558 euros, the Nissan Qashqai hitting 1,669 euros, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class climbing to 1,885 euros. Okan Piynirci of AutoZoWeg.nl noted that the gap between an efficient vehicle and a heavy consumer amounts to nearly 900 euros per year, emphasizing that the variance stems from the vehicle rather than the pump price.
Diesel Drivers Face Even Steeper Hikes
Diesel motorists experienced even sharper cost increases during the same period. Diesel averaged 2,50 euros per liter in September, sitting 79 cent higher than the previous year and outpacing gasoline prices. Because diesel vehicles cover an average of 17,519 kilometers annually, the yearly bill reached at least 2,164 euros, amounting to 688 euro more than a year ago. Price comparison platform UnitedConsumers noted minor daily fluctuations, with standard diesel ticking down slightly to 2,742 euros per liter and premium diesel dropping to 2,832 euros per liter, though broader advisory prices remain well above historical baselines.
Fuel Excise Duty Discounts Phase Out in 2028
Financial planning for vehicle fleets and private owners must account for upcoming regulatory shifts. According to the Belastingplan 2027, the current fuel excise duty discount will remain in place through the next year before scheduled phase-outs begin in 2028.
