Hanoi Reconnaissance battalion Prioritizes Enhanced Swimming Proficiency for Soldiers
the 2nd Special reconnaissance Company of the Hanoi Capital Command’s Reconnaissance Battalion has made significant strides in improving the physical fitness of its soldiers, with a particular focus on swimming capabilities. Recognizing an initial gap in proficiency – many soldiers could swim, but primarily in short distances or using only freestyle - the unit implemented a targeted training program to ensure readiness for reconnaissance and combat missions.
Lieutenant Nguyen Trong Tan, head of the 4th Squad, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that the squad diligently followed the battalion’s plan to establish a robust physical training unit. The program prioritized both theoretical understanding and practical application, beginning with land-based instruction before moving to in-water training. Officers provided consistent support and feedback, with post-session evaluations used to identify and address individual challenges.
These focused efforts have yielded impressive results. Currently, 100% of soldiers in the squad can now proficiently swim breaststroke and are capable of sustaining long-distance swims. Many have achieved “very good” or “excellent” results in testing, demonstrating a physical fitness level that meets the demands of their training, duties, and assigned tasks.
This success is part of a larger initiative driven by the Hanoi Capital Command’s plan to establish “exemplary” and high-quality physical training units by 2025. The battalion developed a scientific plan to achieve this goal and is actively implementing it.
Commander Lam Xuan Dat, deputy commander of the reconnaissance battalion, highlighted key lessons learned. He stressed the importance of scientifically-grounded physical training plans tailored to the unit’s needs and adhering to established regulations. He also advocated for classifying training objectives to prevent overexertion and avoid superficiality. Furthermore, he emphasized linking physical training to motivating activities like competitions, festivals, and sports tournaments to encourage consistent participation.
The improved physical conditioning, notably in swimming, has demonstrably contributed to the battalion’s success in training exercises and mission execution. Recent 2025 training test results show 100% of personnel meeting required standards, with over 85% achieving “good” or ”excellent” ratings.
