Dailymotion, one of the longest-running alternatives to YouTube, continues to attract a global audience with a mix of professionally produced clips, publisher content, and independent creators, according to a report published December 30, 2025 by MakeUseOf.
The report, authored by Gavin Phillips, noted that YouTube dominates online video, possessing an unmatched volume of free content. However, Phillips argues that this dominance doesn’t necessarily equate to the best quality viewing experience. He suggests that platforms like Dailymotion offer arguably better experiences, with greater content depth and coverage of topics sometimes deemed too controversial for YouTube.
Phillips, who has reported from major tech trade shows including CES, IFA, and MWC, observed that Dailymotion feels less focused on the United States than YouTube, presenting a wider variety of broadcasters and channels. He also noted a perceived reduction in the “overblown reaction videos and creator drama” prevalent on YouTube.
While YouTube is ubiquitous, appearing on smartphones, smart TVs, tablets, and smart home hubs, the report suggests users are increasingly seeking alternatives due to concerns about increased advertising, content policy changes, and a “shady strike system.”
Other video platforms mentioned in the MakeUseOf report include Vimeo, which offers ad-free streaming of films, shorts, and documentaries in HD. TikTok, described as a source of trending short videos, and YouTube itself were also noted. The report acknowledges the difficulty in definitively naming the “best” streaming platform, given YouTube’s cultural integration.
As of March 24, 2026, YouTube remains the dominant platform, offering videos and music uploads, and sharing capabilities, according to its official website. TikTok also continues to operate as a platform for short-form video content. Vimeo currently streams free online videos, films, and shorts without advertisements.
