The American writer achieved massive commercial success with her romance fantasy series The Empyrean, which has sold more than 12 million copies across three published volumes. Yarros spoke about her plotting process during a live event where she discussed the ongoing trajectory of the five-book series. Three titles—Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm—are currently available to readers.
Plot Adjustments in Onyx Storm
When asked by attendees about how she determines character survival, Yarros revealed that her writing process involves mapping out fatalities early in the drafting phase. She stated that when she wrote Onyx Storm, she originally intended to kill off different characters at the conclusion of the story.
Because I had to modify the plot and readjust things so that it didn’t look like the other books had the same ending, I left some characters alive who shouldn’t be and whom I’ll have to kill in this book,
Yarros said.
Readers have documented intense emotional engagement with the physical vulnerability and chronic health challenges faced by the protagonist, Violet Sorrengail. Reviewers say Violet struggles with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome as she faces deadly challenges in the Riders Quadrant, depending on tactical planning, dragonscale armor, and her wing leader, Xaden Riorson.
English Release Expected Late 2027 with Amazon Prime Adaptation
The fourth book in the series does not yet hold an official publication date, though industry projections place its release in English toward the end of 2027. Alongside the upcoming book release, Amazon Prime Video is moving forward with a series adaptation of the bestselling novels.
