Mbappé Poised to Challenge Ronaldo‘s real Madrid Scoring Record, Declares Xabi Alonso
MADRID – Kylian mbappé is rapidly approaching a historic milestone with Real Madrid, drawing comparisons to club legend Cristiano Ronaldo, according to manager Xabi Alonso. The French captain has already amassed an impressive 55 goals for Real madrid in 2025, and is just four goals shy of equaling Ronaldo’s club record of 59 goals in a calendar year, set in 2013.
The prolific scoring form of the Real Madrid number 10 has fueled increasing comparisons in the Spanish press, highlighting both his impact on match results and his consistent ability to find the back of the net.
Speaking in a press conference ahead of Sunday’s La Liga clash against Celta Vigo, Alonso stated, “Kylian Mbappé is on the verge of making Real Madrid history like Cristiano did. Not only by the importance he has in the team, but also by the ambition he transmits and the number of goals he scores.”
Alonso further elaborated on the similarities between the two stars, saying, “Kylian is one of the chosen ones. He has within him this desire not only to do things well, but also to have a positive influence on others. It’s something he shares with Cristiano: this contagious ambition, which inspires the rest of the team. I do see similarities between the two.”
Mbappé’s extraordinary form follows a stellar 2024 season where he secured both the European Golden Shoe and the La Liga top scorer title with 31 league goals. He’s currently exceeding that pace, having scored 16 goals in 15 league games, alongside nine goals in five Champions League appearances.
Mbappé will have the chance to close the gap on Ronaldo’s record this Sunday against Celta Vigo (currently 12th in La Liga with 16 points). He then faces a meaningful Champions League test on Wednesday against Pep guardiola’s Manchester City and Erling Haaland. Ronaldo remains Real Madrid’s all-time leading scorer with a remarkable 450 goals in 438 matches – a benchmark Mbappé clearly has his sights on.
