MADRID – FC Barcelona stands to reclaim the La Liga lead following Real Madrid’s stunning 5-2 defeat to Atlético Madrid in a high-scoring derby. The result marks Real Madrid’s first loss of the season and opens the door for Barcelona to surpass their rivals in the standings.
Real Madrid conceded their first defeat in the seventh league game, falling to Atlético Madrid 5-2 (2-2 at halftime). Robin Le Normand gave atlético an early lead in the 14th minute, before Kylian Mbappé equalized for Real in the 25th. Arda Güler briefly put Real ahead in the 36th minute, but Alexander Sörloth leveled the score again just before halftime (45+3).
The second half saw Atlético take control. A penalty awarded in the 51st minute, converted by Julian alvarez, put Atlético in front. Alvarez then extended the lead with a free kick in the 63rd minute. Antoine Griezmann completed the rout with a goal in added time (90+4).
“There are no excuses”
Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso acknowledged his team’s shortcomings.”It was a bad game, we neither played well as a team nor at the pressing, we were not at the level at which we should have been. We are in a construction phase, today is the first defeat and we have to draw our conclusions from it,” said Alonso. “But there are no excuses, we are disappointed, it is a deserved defeat. We were not in the game, we were lacking in speed, and the defeat hurts.”
FC Barcelona can move ahead of Real Madrid in the La Liga table with a victory against Real Sociedad on Sunday (6:30 p.m./DAZN). Currently, the two teams are separated by just two points.
