Health officials are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to raw milk products, with cases reported across several states.
The Centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) has identified a cluster of Salmonella infections that have affected individuals in multiple states. While the specific dairy implicated in the outbreak has not been officially named by the CDC in it’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR),reporting from the Fresno bee in 2024 indicated a link to Raw Farm LLC,located in Fresno County,California. This alleged connection reportedly led to product recalls and facility inspections for the company.
In a separate incident in late 2024, Raw Farm LLC also detected bird flu in some of its products, which prompted another recall, according to the California Department of Public Health.
The MMWR authors noted that while many cases were concentrated in California, infections were also identified in other states. Possible explanations for these non-California cases include patients being unable to recall or accurately report their travel history, or infection through unrecognized secondary transmission. The report also mentioned that the outbreak involved local sales of products originally produced in California, specifically raw cheese or raw milk marketed for pets.
Live Science reached out to Raw farm for comment prior to publication, but the company declined to provide a statement.
More recently, in July 2025, the Allegheny County Health Department in Pennsylvania issued a public health alert urging residents to immediately discard all Family Cow brand raw milk and raw milk cheese products. This advisory followed reports of local residents becoming ill with Salmonella infections after consuming these products. The Family Cow is based in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. The department advised individuals who consumed raw milk products from The Family Cow to consult a healthcare provider if they experience illness.
