Rau Lee Davis Jr. charged with murder in Pompano Beach shooting
Front-Yard Shooting Leaves Fort Lauderdale Man Dead in Pompano Beach
Robert Vaughn, 46, of Fort Lauderdale, died in the front yard of a Pompano Beach home after a late-night gambling game erupted into gunfire at 1530 N.W. Seventh Ave., according to TAPinto Pompano Beach. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies took 50-year-old Rau Lee Davis Jr. of Margate into custody following the incident, booking him on one charge of second-degree murder and one charge of attempted second-degree murder.
Arguments and Gunfire Erupt During Gambling Game
The violence unfolded shortly before midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026. Davis pulled a firearm and discharged multiple rounds, striking both participants. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue arrived at the scene and pronounced Vaughn dead in the yard.
A second adult male sustained injuries in the shooting and received medical treatment. Authorities are withholding the surviving victim’s identity under Marsy’s Law.

Suspect Flees Scene and Later Returns to Face Murder Charges
Following the gunfire, Davis fled the immediate area before returning to the location where deputies arrested him. Local 10 reported that the suspect faces formal counts of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. Meanwhile, investigators have not yet verified a specific motive or released details regarding the firearm used in the homicide.
The incident compounds a troubled record of recent firearm violence in the municipality. Local 10 noted that authorities recently sought public information regarding the unsolved 2022 fatal shooting of 29-year-old Travis Holloway. Separate past incidents include a March 2023 double homicide at an apartment complex near 300 S.E. 11th Ave. that claimed the lives of Joshua Moise and K-CI Octelus, a case which ultimately led to the arrest and extradition of 19-year-old Neil Andrews from South Dakota.
