The violent weather event struck the Aude department 15 kilometers south of Carcassonne as a late-summer heatwave gave way to intense regional thunderstorms. According to local sub-prefect Emmanuelle Plantier-Lemarchand, speaking on French radio, 39 people were injured during the disaster, with 15 individuals requiring hospital treatment. Among the hospitalized was a pregnant woman hurt when her residential structure collapsed.

The entire population of Pomas was evacuated while engineering teams verified whether battered structures remained habitable. National weather service Météo-France recorded peak wind speeds reaching up to 117 km/h in the nearby village of Arquettes-en-Val. Concurrently, regional authorities were forced to cancel the third stage of the Vuelta a España cycle race, which was actively underway in the Aude area, after a severe hailstorm forced riders to seek immediate shelter roughly 15 kilometers from the finish line.
Power grid operators reported that around 2,800 homes across 10 villages initially lost electricity. By the following morning, utility crews had restored power to many sectors, though 1,400 households in the Aude area remained without electricity, according to the local prefecture.
