Rangers Close Gap on Hearts After Thrilling Scottish Premiership Win
Youssef Chermiti scored a hat-trick as Rangers defeated Hearts 4-2 at Ibrox on Sunday, closing the gap on the Scottish Premiership leaders to just two points.
The match, described as the game of the Scottish top-flight season, saw Hearts take the lead twice in the first half. Marc Leonard opened the scoring in the 16th minute, capitalizing on a turnover forced by a misdirected pass from Emmanuel Fernandez. However, Rangers quickly responded with an own goal from Michael Steinwender just three minutes later, after a shot from Mikey Moore rebounded off the crossbar.
Hearts regained the lead through Claudio Braga, who headed home a cross from Steinwender in the 30th minute. But Rangers continued to battle back, and Chermiti leveled the score before halftime, finishing a rebound after his initial shot was blocked by Craig Halkett.
Chermiti then secured the victory for Rangers in the second half, heading home from a cross by Andreas Skov Olsen shortly before the hour mark. He completed his hat-trick in added time, converting a pass from Djeidi Gassama to seal a 4-2 win.
The result significantly impacts the Scottish Premiership title race. Hearts, previously holding a comfortable lead, now find themselves just two points ahead of Rangers. The win marks a turning point for Chermiti, who had previously faced criticism following his £8 million transfer from Everton, and the now departed sporting director Kevin Thelwell. His recent performances, including a brace against Celtic, demonstrate a growing ability to perform in crucial matches.
Despite a spirited effort, Hearts struggled to create meaningful opportunities after the interval. Derek McInnes’s side will be disappointed with their defensive errors, which proved costly against a determined Rangers team. Rangers, meanwhile, will gaze to build on this momentum and continue their pursuit of Hearts at the top of the table.
The atmosphere at Ibrox was described as electric, with the home crowd roaring their approval as Chermiti completed his hat-trick, signaling a potential shift in the balance of power in the Scottish Premiership.
