Ramon Vega Challenges Gianni Infantino for FIFA Presidency
Ramon Vega Launches FIFA Presidency Bid Against Gianni Infantino
Ramon Vega has officially declared his candidacy for the presidency of FIFA, becoming the first challenger to line up against incumbent Gianni Infantino for the upcoming 2027 election, according to Eurosport.
The 55-year-old former Switzerland international submitted his bid with an stated ambition to restore trust and transparency within the global governing body of football. According to RTS, the Soleure native positioned himself as a reformer aiming to unify what he termed the global football family through a more collegial and decentralized governance model.
Sharp Criticism of Current Leadership Direction
Vega sharply criticized the current administrative direction.
“The football does not belong neither to presidents, nor to confederations, nor to leaders,” he stated, as reported by RTS.
This is not the former Grasshopper and Tottenham player’s first attempt at securing the role. RTS noted that Vega previously sought to run in the 2015, 2019, and 2022 elections without success.
Candidates Must Submit Paperwork by November 2026
The election is scheduled to take place on March 18, 2027, in Morocco during the 77th FIFA Congress.
Candidates face a strict deadline to lodge their official paperwork, with all submissions required before November 18, 2026. Vega stated he remains confident that he will secure the necessary backing of five national member federations required to validate his ballot placement, according to RTS.
Fluid Electoral Landscape Across European Federations
The overall election results are still changing. RMC Sport reported from Berlin that UEFA leadership is actively searching for a viable candidate to challenge Infantino, who maintains a firm grip on the structure of the organization despite mounting external friction. Additional challengers may still formally declare their intentions before the November cutoff.
Infantino Leads Despite Formal Complaints from Federations
Infantino heads into the electoral cycle facing multiple concurrent administrative controversies. Le Parisien reported that the Norwegian Football Federation recently lodged a formal complaint against FIFA regarding several high-profile issues, including the controversial peace prize initiative and the ongoing Balogun affair.
Despite these challenges from European federations and disgruntled national bodies, France 24 observed that the current FIFA president remains comfortably positioned in the lead as the autumn nomination window approaches.
