Ignacio Buse of Peru upset Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals of the Rio ATP 500 tournament on Thursday, securing his place in the semifinals. Buse won with a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, in a match interrupted by rain.
The 21-year-old Peruvian is the second player from his country to reach multiple ATP semifinals in the 21st century, following Luis Horna. Buse had previously defeated Igor Marcondes and João Fonseca in three-set matches to reach the quarterfinals.
Buse will now face Alejandro Tabilo of Chile in the semifinals. Tabilo advanced after a hard-fought victory over Thiago Agustin Tirante, winning 7-6, 6-7, 6-1. The match between Tabilo and Tirante was moved to Court 1 due to the rain that disrupted play on the Guga Kuerten court, where Buse and Berrettini were competing.
Also advancing to the semifinals was Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina, who defeated Jaime Faria 7-6, 6-4. Etcheverry will play Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic, who won against Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-4, 6-4, without facing a single break point.
Tabilo and Buse have met once before, in Davis Cup competition, with Tabilo winning in three sets. The semifinal match between the two players is scheduled to take place today.
