Russia’s leading universities will learn their rankings in the annual RAEX-100 list on June 16th at the “Three Missions of Russian Education” forum, according to the RAEX agency.
The RAEX-100 ranking, now in its fourteenth year, assesses universities across Russia based on a range of criteria, including the quality of education, employer demand for graduates, and research activity. This year’s list includes institutions from 30 Russian regions, signaling a broad geographical representation of higher education excellence.
Moscow State University continues to hold the top position for the thirteenth consecutive year, followed by the Moscow State Technical University named after N.E. Bauman. The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Saint Petersburg State University, and the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI round out the top five, maintaining their positions from the previous year, according to a report from Kommersant.
The Higher School of Economics has been overtaken by the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), which now ranks sixth. RAEX also publishes a series of specialized rankings, including one focused on public and municipal administration, with further localized rankings expected to be released in the coming weeks.
The RAEX agency released preliminary rankings in February 2026, indicating shifts in leadership within several federal districts. The agency also published the first ESG ratings for universities in December 2025, assessing seven institutions on environmental, social, and governance factors. A pilot ranking of universities from BRICS countries was also released in December 2025, encompassing institutions from 20 nations.
The “Three Missions of the University” framework, under which the RAEX-100 is categorized, emphasizes the roles of universities in education, research, and societal engagement. The forum on June 16th will provide a platform for discussing the latest developments in Russian higher education and the evolving landscape of university rankings.
