Racing Club de Avellaneda defeated Banfield 2-0 Saturday afternoon at the Florencio Sola stadium, securing a victory fueled by goals from Marco Di Césare and Adrián “Maravilla” Martínez. The match, part of the fifth round of the Torneo Apertura, saw Racing overcome a determined Banfield side despite an early disallowed goal by the home team.
The contest was marked by early controversy when a goal by Banfield’s Pai was overturned due to an offside call on Arboleda, narrowly preventing the home side from taking the lead. Racing responded in the 27th minute when Di Césare headed the ball into the net following a header from Conechny that was initially saved by Sanguinetti. Di Césare’s participation in the match came despite ongoing negotiations regarding a potential transfer to Santos of Brazil, with the player reportedly prioritizing his availability for Racing over concerns about potential injury that could jeopardize the deal.
Racing extended their advantage just before halftime, with Martínez converting a penalty kick awarded after a handball called against Banfield’s Perrotta. The penalty was awarded by referee Pablo Dóvalo.
The second half saw tactical adjustments from both sides. Racing substituted Baltasar Rodríguez with Bruno Zuculini, while Banfield brought on Auzmendi, Moreno and Adoryan, replacing Villegas, Gómez, and Méndez. Racing also made changes, bringing on Zaracho and Carboni for Conechny, and Miljevic. Banfield responded with Sepúlveda and Zalazar replacing Perrotta and Piñero.
Banfield pressed for a response, but Racing managed to maintain control, whereas Racing’s Marcos Rojo was substituted in the 76th minute for Pardo. The win marks a positive turn for Racing, following a previous streak of three consecutive defeats. Pedro Troglio, Banfield’s manager, was ejected from the match in the 31st minute following a foul committed by Baltasar Rodríguez.
Negotiations surrounding Di Césare’s potential move to Santos continue, with Santos offering a loan deal including a $750,000 fee and a $5,000,000 purchase option for 75% of the player’s rights, contingent on him appearing in at least 10 matches as a starter. Racing is reportedly seeking a more favorable financial arrangement, particularly regarding the distribution of funds after taxes and potential future transfer revenue, as Argentinos Juniors retains a 30% stake in the player.
