Queensland Storms: Power Outages & Giant Hail Hit Brisbane & South East QLD

Severe thunderstorms have lashed south-east ‌Queensland, bringing destructive winds, heavy rainfall,⁢ and exceptionally large hail that has left‍ tens of thousands without power. Teh Bureau‍ of Meteorology (BoM) reported hail up to 8cm in diameter falling in⁣ areas including tamrookum, Coombabah, and Mount Tamborine.

The extreme weather event has caused widespread⁢ disruption ​across the region, with more than⁢ 138,000 customers experiencing power ⁢outages as of Monday afternoon, according​ to Energex’s justin Coomber. Energex has also reported approximately 300 downed power lines. Residents in Logan and other areas shared images on social media depicting hailstones exceeding 8cm in size.

The bom warned that “very dangerous thunderstorms” were ⁣moving into ‌the southern and eastern suburbs of ​Brisbane,‍ with the potential for further damaging to destructive winds. Additional storm development is expected across south-east Queensland as the system tracks northwards. ⁣

“I haven’t seen hail in Eagleby ​for the 5 years I’ve lived here,” one Logan resident posted ⁣on‍ social media, highlighting the unusual ‍intensity of the storm.

the severe weather comes as a heatwave is forecast for northern queensland, with temperatures expected ⁢to​ reach ‍the mid-40s‍ in some areas in the coming days.
