Severe thunderstorms have lashed south-east Queensland, bringing destructive winds, heavy rainfall, and exceptionally large hail that has left tens of thousands without power. Teh Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) reported hail up to 8cm in diameter falling in areas including tamrookum, Coombabah, and Mount Tamborine.
The extreme weather event has caused widespread disruption across the region, with more than 138,000 customers experiencing power outages as of Monday afternoon, according to Energex’s justin Coomber. Energex has also reported approximately 300 downed power lines. Residents in Logan and other areas shared images on social media depicting hailstones exceeding 8cm in size.
The bom warned that “very dangerous thunderstorms” were moving into the southern and eastern suburbs of Brisbane, with the potential for further damaging to destructive winds. Additional storm development is expected across south-east Queensland as the system tracks northwards.
“I haven’t seen hail in Eagleby for the 5 years I’ve lived here,” one Logan resident posted on social media, highlighting the unusual intensity of the storm.
the severe weather comes as a heatwave is forecast for northern queensland, with temperatures expected to reach the mid-40s in some areas in the coming days.
