Qualcomm Launches Snapdragon 8 Elite Series for Mobile AI
Qualcomm has announced a new generation of high-end mobile processors, led by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme, designed to shift smartphones toward agent-based artificial intelligence. Unveiled by global president Cristiano Amon during a technology sector event in the United States, the new hardware platform aims to run complex AI models directly on the device rather than relying on external cloud servers.
Extreme Processing Power for Local AI Models
The more powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme processor is engineered to execute artificial intelligence models containing up to 30 billion parameters locally. According to Qualcomm, this capability allows phones to move beyond simple app use and smart assistants toward proactive agents capable of perceiving context, reasoning, planning, and executing multi-step tasks independently.
To support continuous operations, the chips feature a built-in digital memory called "Personal Scribe," which preserves information to help the artificial intelligence understand context and respond quickly. The processing shift reduces dependence on internet connectivity and external data centers while managing device energy consumption efficiently through a redesigned architecture.
Next-Generation 8K Video and Gaming Upgrades
Beyond artificial intelligence workloads, the processing architecture targets substantial upgrades in visual capture and rendering. The technology quadruples video processing capacity, supporting 8K video recording at 60 frames per second alongside 4K slow-motion capture at 240 frames per second.
For mobile gaming, the chips increase frame rates and image resolution while utilizing artificial intelligence to analyze pixel data for enhanced visual detail and fluidity.
Global Smartphone Brands Queue Up for TSMC-Built Silicon
Manufactured by TSMC, the new processors are already slated for upcoming flagship devices across multiple major hardware brands. Motorola announced the Signature 27 utilizing the new platform, while Xiaomi revealed the 18 Pro Max. Samsung, Asus, and Honor are also scheduled to incorporate the processors into their future hardware lineups.
