Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 with Advanced AI for Hearables

September 23, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 Brings Edge AI and Wi-Fi to Next-Gen Hearables

At the Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui, Qualcomm Technologies officially unveiled the Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2, a fully integrated audio platform purpose-built to combine high-fidelity wireless audio, direct cloud connectivity, and substantially increased on-device artificial intelligence processing for next-generation hearables. According to the company, the new platform is designed to transition audio wearables into always-available interfaces for personal AI during an era described by executives as the agentic age.

The Tech TL;DR: What You Need to Know

  • On-Device AI Compute: Qualcomm doubled processing capacity compared to previous generations, enabling multiple smart features to execute simultaneously via a new eNPU accelerator.
  • Direct Wi-Fi Connectivity: Integrates micro-power Wi-Fi 6E (XPAN), permitting cloud-based AI interactions without constantly routing traffic through a companion smartphone.
  • Form-Factor Versatility: Scalable hardware architecture supports traditional true wireless earbuds, over-ear headphones, open-ear designs, audio glasses, hearing wellness devices, and camera-equipped “camera buds.”

Architectural Improvements and Lower Power Draw

Replacing the older Snapdragon Sound S7 Gen 1 introduced in 2023, the Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 achieves a physical footprint up to 30% smaller while cutting power draw by up to 40%, according to hardware specifications released at the summit. Multi-core processing tasks are distributed across three audio digital signal processors (DSPs), a dedicated low-latency DSP handling active noise cancellation, a Qualcomm eNPU Accelerator and Framework, and a multi-core application processor.

For audio reproduction, the platform maintains support for up to 24-bit 96kHz audio streams utilizing Qualcomm aptX Lossless. Noise cancellation receives an upgrade to the 5th-generation Adaptive ANC system. This framework leverages dedicated hardware and real-time AI to adjust dynamically to environmental changes, shifts in user posture, or variations in physical ear seal fitting. Voice calls utilize Qualcomm cVc clear voice capture and Audio Sense processing across multi-mic arrays to isolate user speech from background interference.

Enabling Multimodal AI Agents Without a Phone

A primary architectural shift in the Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 is the inclusion of a micro-power Wi-Fi 6E module, utilizing Qualcomm Expanded Personal Area Network (XPAN) technology originally announced in 2024. This capability gives audio peripherals an independent, low-power path to cloud-based AI resources. Alongside this, the platform supports a dual Bluetooth radio architecture featuring Bluetooth 7.0 and Higher Bands readiness.

Ziad Asghar, Senior Vice President and General Manager of XR, Wearables, and Personal AI at Qualcomm Technologies, stated during the product unveiling: Our research tells us that up to 70% of users want advanced AI capabilities in their wearable devices. As AI becomes a core capability, users will increasingly expect more natural ways to interact with it. Those interactions won’t always happen through a screen. They will happen through natural conversations, where users can simply speak to an AI assistant and receive help in real time.

Asghar added: With Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2, we’re heralding intelligent audio wearables that enable experiences such as real-time translation, contextual assistance, personalized hearing, and multimodal interactions that combine audio, vision, and AI.

To support this ecosystem, Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon Sound Apps & Agents, a software framework designed to connect compatible audio devices directly with AI assistants, translation services, productivity tools, and content repositories. Target device categories extend to open-ear products, hearing aids, and camera-enabled earbuds designed to capture environmental context rather than static photographs. Initial hardware and software supporters announced by Qualcomm include Cleer, Cinemo, Qobuz, Roon, CAI, and MicroEJ.

Developer Implementation and Edge Integration

The doubled AI compute capacity allows developers to execute local inference tasks directly on the peripheral device.

# Conceptual Audio eNPU Pipeline Initialization
import qcom_enpu_sdk as enpu

def initialize_audio_processor():
    device = enpu.select_accelerator(index=0)
    device.configure_context(
        sampling_rate=96000,
        bit_depth=24,
        enable_adaptive_anc=True,
        buffer_latency_ms=10
    )
    model = device.load_model("agentic_audio_v2.bin")
    print(f"Connected to {device.name}. eNPU ready for multimodal inference.")
    return model

if __name__ == "__main__":
    ai_pipeline = initialize_audio_processor()

By shifting responsive tasks like wake-word detection and local noise suppression to the eNPU while routing complex contextual reasoning to cloud services via Wi-Fi 6E, the architecture balances battery longevity with computational throughput.

The Editorial Kicker

The Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 marks a technical pivot away from smartphone-tethered peripherals toward autonomous, context-aware wearables. By packing Wi-Fi 6E connectivity and an eNPU into a silicon footprint 30% smaller than its predecessor, Qualcomm has lowered the architectural barrier for ambient computing.
