Qatar deal for Nations Championship hosting and sponsorship collapses
An £80m hosting and title sponsorship deal for the Nations Championship has collapsed after Qatar withdrew from an agreement to stage the tournament’s finals, sportindustry.co.uk reported.
The cancelled arrangement included staging rights for the six-match finals series in 2028 and 2032, alongside a four-edition title sponsorship by Qatar Airways. According to the Guardian, the sponsorship portion accounted for roughly £15m of the package.
Geopolitical Tensions Delay Implementation
The outline agreement was struck last year, but the Qatar government delayed implementation ahead of the July opening matches due to sensitivity surrounding conflict in the Middle East. Donald Trump’s decision to order US airstrikes on Iran in March compounded the regional complications. With the US and Israel continuing to threaten further strikes despite peace talks hosted by Qatar, both parties reached a mutual decision to cancel the deal.

The disruption also affects other high-profile events in the region. The Guardian reported that Qatar’s sporting ambitions, alongside those of neighbouring Saudi Arabia, face severe uncertainty regarding upcoming events like the scheduled Formula One Grand Prix, while the Qatar MotoGP is scheduled to go ahead this weekend despite a boycott from several riders amid safety concerns.
France and Spain Eye 2028 Finals Hosting Duties
The competition is jointly run by the Six Nations and four leading Sanzaar unions. Organisers maintain confidence that the lost income can be successfully recovered through replacement deals. France and Spain have already informally expressed interest in hosting the 2028 finals. The Stade de France emerges as the most likely venue, with an official invitation to tender slated for early next year.
Looking further ahead on the tournament calendar, the United States has been pencilled in to host the 2030 finals, arriving one year before the country stages the 2031 Rugby World Cup.

Current Tournament Proceeds Without Title Sponsor
Despite losing the Qatar Airways backing before its first official season, the inaugural competition remains projected to deliver a profit. Broadcast agreements are secured with more than 80 broadcasters globally. Furthermore, 70 percent of tickets for the finals weekend have already been sold, with sellouts anticipated once remaining fixtures are confirmed.
The tournament action continues this weekend. England plays the first of three home Tests over the next three weeks against Sanzaar nations, Japan, and Fiji, following a summer tour of three away matches in the southern hemisphere.
The debut season culminates on Sunday 29 November. The top-ranked side from each hemisphere will meet in the grand final at Allianz Stadium, while competing nations play their equivalent-placed opponents across the same weekend.
