Qantas Reward Seats: New Search Tool Makes Finding Flights Easier
Qantas has launched a new search tool designed to streamline the process of finding reward seats, addressing longstanding complaints from frequent flyers about the difficulty of securing special fares. The platform, unveiled Tuesday, allows Qantas Frequent Flyer members to view reward seat availability for the next 12 months, including flights operated by its Oneworld alliance partners.
The new tool allows users to search for reward flights by region – such as Europe or the United States – a feature previously unavailable. It displays all available flight classes and the number of points required for booking, alongside applicable taxes. The number of available reward seats is also shown and is regularly updated, according to Qantas.
The development of the tool responds to frequent flyer frustration with the previous booking system, which lacked transparency regarding reward seat availability. Ayesha de Kretser of the Australian Financial Review reported on the overhaul as a direct response to customer grievances.
Qantas collaborated with Gyoza Flights, an Australian reward seat search service, to develop the new functionality. Gyoza Flights also offers Velocity reward seat searches and SMS alerts as part of its paid membership services. The Qantas tool currently focuses on international Classic Flight Rewards.
While the new tool represents a significant improvement in accessibility, some limitations remain. The current iteration does not allow users to filter results by specific airlines, nor does it offer a journey duration filter to exclude flights with lengthy layovers. The tool does not display reward seats reserved for elite frequent flyer members, such as those with Gold or Platinum status.
The launch of the reward seat finder tool follows recent moves by Qantas to improve its loyalty program offerings. The airline has not yet announced a timeline for addressing the identified limitations of the new search tool.
