According to records reviewed by ProPublica and interviews with three individuals familiar with the event, Umar Kremlev footed a substantial portion of the bill. The expenses covered by the Russian businessman included renting out a private island where a reception was hosted and guests stayed, alongside a costly fireworks display over the sea.
Kremlev heads the International Boxing Association (IBA), a sports organization heavily financed by the Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom. Payments for the wedding were routed through an IBA-affiliated entity based in Dubai, which the boxing association utilizes for financial transactions, as reported by ProPublica. The guest list of roughly 50 attendees included high-profile figures such as Jared Kushner and Eric Trump, alongside Kremlev and a group of associates who spoke Russian.
In a statement posted to Instagram and co-signed by her husband, Bettina Trump confirmed the financial arrangement. The couple stated that their “dear friend” Kremlev “very generously hosted two incredible nights” of festivities. They described the arrangement as an extraordinarily generous wedding gift, noting that the multi-day weekend had been planned in advance as a gathering with friends after a private wedding ceremony attended only by family.
“It’s unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister simply because of who someone is or where they come from,” the couple wrote in their joint statement, emphasizing that friendship does not require a political motive.
