Punjab predicted to receive 25pc more monsoon rains this year: PDMA – Pakistan

Punjab Braces for Heavy Monsoon Rains, Karachi to Get Relief

Officials issue warnings as intense weather patterns develop across the region.

Pakistan is preparing for significant monsoon rains, with Punjab expecting a 25% increase in rainfall this year. Meanwhile, Karachi anticipates showers, potentially ending a prolonged heatwave. Authorities have issued alerts, urging citizens to take precautions against the extreme conditions.

Punjab’s Rainfall Outlook

Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Irfan Ali Kathia, has confirmed predictions of heightened monsoon activity in Punjab. The initial phase of the monsoon is anticipated to persist until July 1, bringing powerful winds and thunderstorms to numerous districts. Commissioners and deputy commissioners throughout the province, as instructed by Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed, are on high alert.

Areas expected to receive rain with strong winds include Rawalpindi, Murree, and several other districts. Furthermore, rain is expected in Lahore, Faisalabad, and several other locations. South Punjab, encompassing Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and surrounding areas, is also slated for rainfall from June 26-28. The PDMA is working in conjunction with different departments like health, irrigation, and local government to maintain vigilance.

“Monsoon rains are predicted to be 25pc more this year,” stated the PDMA director general. He also added, “Citizens are requested to take precautionary measures in extreme weather conditions, stay in safe locations during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary travel.”

Karachi’s Weather Forecast

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has projected a three-day weather forecast for Karachi, with isolated rain and thunderstorms predicted for Friday evening. The city is currently experiencing hot and humid conditions, with temperatures ranging from 34-36 degrees Celsius and humidity at 72% in the morning. For Thursday, partly cloudy and humid weather is anticipated, with a chance of light rain. Friday is expected to bring similar conditions, with the possibility of evening thunderstorms and temperatures between 35-37 degrees Celsius, along with humidity between 70-80%.

Broader Regional Impact

The PMD has also indicated that monsoon currents are intensifying across the upper and central parts of the country. A westerly wave is moving towards the upper regions, with increased activity expected on Thursday. This is likely to bring dust storms and rainfall to several districts, including Tharparker and Umerkot. Further rainfall with thunderstorms is expected in various areas on June 27.

According to a 2023 study, heavy rainfall events can lead to significant economic losses through infrastructure damage and disruption of agricultural activities (Study Link).

Safety Measures

Residents are encouraged to exercise caution during this period. Irfan Ali Kathia has cautioned about potential landslides in mountainous regions such as Murree and Galiyat. Citizens are advised to stay safe during lightning and to contact the PDMA helpline 1129 in case of an emergency.
