Videos of a young Japanese macaque named Punch, born in July 2025 at the Ichikawa City Zoo, have captivated audiences worldwide as he navigates social integration after initially struggling to connect with his troop. The 7-month-old monkey first gained attention in January after being spotted with an orangutan plush toy, given to him by zookeepers as a substitute for his biological mother, who rejected him shortly after his birth.
Footage circulating online initially showed other monkeys rebuffing Punch, leading to an outpouring of support for the primate and the hashtag “がんばれパンチ” (“HangInTherePunch”) among Japanese social media users. Some expressed concern over his welfare, with one X user suggesting a “panchi-kun protection squad” should be formed. Others threatened to confront the monkeys who were seen pushing him.
Zoo officials have since reported a positive shift in Punch’s interactions with other macaques. Recent observations indicate he is now being groomed by another monkey – a significant indicator of acceptance within primate social structures. Grooming, according to zoo caretakers, signifies trust and bonding. Videos released by the zoo similarly demonstrate Punch playing with younger monkeys and being embraced by an older member of the troop.
“He’s actively engaging with other monkeys, and I can sense he’s growing up,” said Shumpei Miyakoshi, a caretaker at the Ichikawa City Zoo. “Even when scolded by other monkeys, he quickly recovers. He’s mentally strong.”
The zoo addressed public concern regarding an incident where an adult monkey appeared to attack Punch, explaining that the adult was likely the mother of a monkey with whom Punch was attempting to interact and was reacting to perceived interference with her offspring. The statement, issued on X, indicated the adult monkey was expressing displeasure, not malice.
Punch’s story has resonated globally, with news outlets reporting on his journey from isolation to tentative acceptance. The Ichikawa City Zoo continues to monitor Punch’s progress and share updates on his integration into the macaque troop.
