Puerto Rican Theater Festival 2026: “Mi Isla en Sueños” in Santurce
San Juan, Puerto Rico – The Puerto Rican theatrical company Y No Había Luz will present “Mi Isla en Sueños” as part of the 63rd Puerto Rican Theater Festival, running from February 6th to May 17th, 2026. The play, described as a family-friendly production, aims to explore themes of imagination and collective identity within the Puerto Rican community.
The 63rd edition of the festival, organized by the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña (ICP), will feature 12 plays performed across multiple venues, including the Teatro Francisco Arriví, Teatro Victoria Espinosa, and, for the first time, the Teatro América in Vega Baja. Additional performance spaces include the Taller Comunitario La Goyco and the Pablo Casals Hall of the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music.
This year’s festival is dedicated to veteran actress Ángela Meyer, recognizing her significant contributions to Puerto Rican theater and television. Melissa Santana, executive director of the ICP, stated that Meyer’s career “has marked generations and has left an indelible mark” on the island’s cultural landscape. A formal tribute to Meyer will accept place on May 1st at the Teatro Victoria Espinosa, where she will star in Myrna Casas’s monologue, “Tres noches tropicales y una vida de infierno.”
The festival will open with a revival of Deborah Hunt’s “Volveré,” scheduled to run from February 6th to 8th at the Teatro Victoria Espinosa as part of the ICP’s Artist Residency Program. The production utilizes masks, object theater, and visual language to explore themes of memory, journey, and transformation.
The inclusion of performances in Vega Baja marks a modern expansion for the festival, bringing theatrical productions to a wider audience through free student matinees. The ICP has stated its commitment to both the development and visibility of Puerto Rican theater, as well as recognizing key figures in the nation’s cultural scene.
The festival’s programming also includes a February 19th discussion at the Teatro Francisco Arriví titled “El teatro en la rehabilitación y prevención,” which will focus on the role of theater as a tool for social reflection.
