PSX Gains Slightly Amid Geopolitical Tensions and IMF Law Amendments

September 26, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) closed with modest gains on Friday, September 26, 2026, as investors engaged in selective value hunting despite persistent geopolitical tensions, elevated crude oil prices, and an impending International Monetary Fund review of its financial sector governance requirements.

Market Performance and Trading Volumes on Friday

Trading activity remained range-bound during the weekend session, according to Topline Securities Ltd. The benchmark KSE-100 index fluctuated in both directions before closing flat, reaching an intraday high of 171,160 and a low of 169,891, as noted by Ali Najib, Deputy Head of Trading at Arif Habib Ltd. Investor participation weakened sharply during the session. Trading volume plunged 36.47 percent to 482.7 million shares, while turnover value dipped 29.97 percent to Rs19.2 billion. Cnergyico PK remained the volume leader with 108.2m shares traded.

Specific heavy-weight equities supported the index during the choppy session. Habib Bank, United Bank, Bank Alfalah, Bank Al-Habib, and Pakistan State Oil (PSO) collectively contributed 206 points to the benchmark. Conversely, Meezan Bank, Fauji Fertiliser, Hub Power, Pakistan Telecommunication Company, and Cnergyico PK wiped out 152 points from the index.

Corporate Earnings and IMF Financial Sector Governance Review

On the corporate front, Pakistan State Oil reported its full-year fiscal 2026 earnings per share at Rs32.10, representing a 28 percent decline year-on-year. The drop was primarily driven by lower sales volumes, higher inventory losses, elevated petroleum prices, and a weaker contribution from the liquefied natural gas segment amid ongoing geopolitical friction. PSO announced a final cash dividend of Rs10 per share for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026.

This market activity coincides with regulatory developments on the macroeconomic front. The International Monetary Fund sought approximately 174 amendments to various laws aimed at strengthening financial sector governance. These changes arrive ahead of the formal start of the fourth review of the $7bn Extended Fund Facility and the third review of the $1.4bn Resilience Support Facility, which begin on Monday, September 28, 2026.

Geopolitical Pressures and Domestic Developments

Investor sentiment remained cautious due to a confluence of external and domestic uncertainties. Participants preferred to stay on the sidelines amid elevated crude oil prices and a lack of meaningful progress in negotiations between the United States and Iran. Regional security concerns also weighed on sentiment, with reports indicating that Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan are expected to hold an urgent, high-level meeting under a joint defense pact to discuss measures supporting Saudi Arabia following attacks by Yemen’s Houthis, while Tehran sought to distance itself from the rapid advance of its Houthi allies.

On the domestic front, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) decided to delay its planned march to Islamabad. This postponement followed the deployment of thousands of security personnel, extensive road blockades, and strict restrictions on public gatherings across the capital region.

As regulatory frameworks shift under international lending agreements and corporations handle compressed margins, businesses seeking strategic guidance often consult specialized corporate legal counsel and financial advisory firms to manage compliance and mitigate market volatility.
