PSV Loses to FC Volendam: Eredivisie Upset & Reaction

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Volendam pulled off a stunning upset Friday, defeating Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven 2-1 at Kras Stadion. The result marks only the second league defeat of the season for Peter Bosz’s side and injects a jolt of energy into the relegation battle at the bottom of the table.

The match, played on a chilly Friday the 13th, saw FC Volendam, currently 15th in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie, overcome a significant talent disparity to secure a memorable victory. PSV, boasting a commanding 17-point lead over second-place Feyenoord, appeared poised to continue their dominant run, having won their previous 16 consecutive league matches.

PSV had recently navigated a challenging away fixture against FC Groningen, emerging with a 1-2 victory. However, they found themselves struggling to break down a determined Volendam side that had also recently found form, claiming a 1-2 win at PEC Zwolle the previous weekend. That momentum proved crucial.

The game remained tightly contested throughout, with PSV initially appearing to gain control. However, Volendam’s resilience and opportunistic attacking play began to unsettle the league leaders. In the 82nd minute, PSV managed to equalize through Man, finding space in the penalty area and firing into the bottom corner. The goal seemed to momentarily shift the momentum back in PSV’s favor, suggesting they might salvage a draw.

But Volendam refused to yield. Just five minutes later, in the 87th minute, Oehlers restored the home side’s lead with a well-taken finish following a precise through ball from Kwakman. The stadium erupted as Volendam supporters celebrated what appeared to be a decisive goal.

The drama wasn’t over. Volendam extended their lead to 2-1 in the 87th minute, with Oehlers capitalizing on a well-placed pass to beat PSV goalkeeper Schiks. The goal sent the home crowd into raptures and left PSV reeling.

Adding to PSV’s woes, Ould-Chikh was forced off the pitch in the 85th minute, requiring a double substitution as Kökçü also made way for Plat and Mühren. The changes, however, failed to spark a late comeback.

PSV pushed for an equalizer in the dying moments, with Boadu’s effort forcing a save from Volendam’s goalkeeper, Van Oevelen, and Til coming close to connecting with a second ball. But Volendam’s defense held firm, ultimately securing a historic victory.

The win is a significant boost for Rick Kruys’ Volendam side, providing valuable points in their fight to avoid relegation. They now sit four points ahead of Telstar, who occupy the first relegation playoff spot. For PSV, the defeat serves as a rare setback in an otherwise dominant season, raising questions about their ability to handle pressure and maintain consistency as the title race nears its conclusion.

The match concluded with 90+4 minutes on the clock, confirming the final score of 2-1 to FC Volendam. The result will undoubtedly be discussed throughout the Eredivisie for weeks to come, highlighting the unpredictable nature of football and the potential for upsets even at the highest level.

The game also saw a tense finish with four minutes of added time, with Volendam successfully defending their lead. Van der Eijk, the referee, added the extra time, of which over two minutes elapsed before the final whistle.

PSV’s previous away form had been exceptional, with 16 consecutive league wins on the road. This defeat brings that impressive run to an abrupt end, and serves as a reminder that even the most dominant teams are vulnerable on their day.
