Psoriasis Linked to Increased Risk of Advanced Macular Degeneration
PARIS – New data presented at the annual conference of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) suggests individuals with psoriasis may face a heightened risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD), particularly the more severe, exudative form of the disease. The analysis, conducted using the TriNetX database, revealed an increased incidence of AMD among psoriasis patients.
AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. While previous studies hinted at a connection between psoriasis and the “moist” or exudative form of AMD – the more advanced stage often leading to significant visual impairment and even blindness - this research reinforces the link and highlights the potential for broader ocular implications in those with the chronic inflammatory skin condition. Psoriasis is already known to elevate the risk of cardiovascular events and type 2 diabetes, and these new findings suggest the eye should be considered another potential target of the disease’s systemic effects.
The TriNetX data, detailed in abstract 4670, adds to growing evidence that psoriasis is not solely limited to skin and joints, but represents a systemic inflammatory condition with far-reaching health consequences.
