PS6 Price: Will $699 Still Be Possible Against a $800+ Xbox?

March 31, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Microsoft has confirmed its next-generation Xbox, codenamed Project Helix, will be capable of playing both Xbox and PC games, but early indications suggest a price tag exceeding $800. This potential cost has implications for Sony’s PlayStation 6, potentially influencing its pricing strategy and market positioning.

According to hardware leaker KeplerL2, the bill of materials (BOM) cost for the PS6 is estimated at around $760, suggesting a retail price of $699 could be feasible with a “reasonable subsidy” from Sony. However, the leaker questions whether Sony will need to offer such a subsidy if the Xbox Project Helix enters the market at a significantly higher price point, effectively reducing direct price competition.

The pricing landscape is further complicated by ongoing global component shortages, particularly in the DRAM market, driven by increasing demand from the artificial intelligence industry. These shortages have already prompted predictions of delays for both console generations and cancellations of PC hardware, impacting manufacturing costs and potentially influencing launch timelines. According to a report from Bloomberg in February 2026, Sony is considering pushing the PS6 launch to 2028 or even 2029 due to these memory constraints.

Adding to the strategic considerations, Sony is reportedly scaling back its efforts to port PlayStation exclusive titles to PC. This move could incentivize consumers to purchase the PS6 to access these games, even at a potentially higher price, by effectively re-internalizing the value of its software offerings. Rumors also suggest Sony is exploring a standalone PlayStation 6 Portable device, which could address a more price-sensitive segment of the market if the main PS6 console is positioned at a premium price.

If Project Helix launches above $800, Sony may be able to pursue a more comfortable profit margin or maintain a target price of $699 with minimal subsidy. The ultimate decision will depend on the trajectory of DRAM prices and Sony’s ability to secure exclusive content to support a higher average selling price (ASP). Jason Ronald, VP of Next Generation at Xbox, confirmed at GDC 2026 that alpha developer kits for Project Helix will ship to game development studios beginning in 2027.

In this scenario, the competitive landscape will extend beyond the console’s list price to encompass memory availability, bundle offerings, and the timing of exclusive game releases. While a $699 PS6 remains a possibility, its realization is increasingly contingent on easing component costs and the degree of price aggression Microsoft demonstrates at launch.
