Przemysław Saleta requires kidney transplant and dialysis
Przemysław Saleta, who donated a kidney to his daughter in 2007, announced on the profile of the Bieg po Nowe Życie initiative that he now faces dialysis and requires a kidney transplant. The 58-year-old former athlete revealed the update on the social media profile of the “Bieg po Nowe Życie” initiative.
Health Complications Following COVID-19
Saleta stated that his current kidney issues began five years ago after he contracted COVID-19. One month after the illness, he suffered a stroke, which resulted in a five-day hospital stay where doctors diagnosed kidney failure. In January, physicians also found atrial fibrillation. Saleta noted that he did not feel the fibrillation and likely had it for a long time, which subsequently damaged his heart. That heart damage further impacted his kidney function, and recent medical tests showed a significant worsening of his condition, leading to scheduled dialysis starting next Monday.
History of the 2007 Transplant and Advocacy
The upcoming medical developments follow a complex medical history spanning nearly two decades. In 2007, Saleta underwent surgery to donate a kidney to his daughter, Nicole, after she was diagnosed with acute kidney failure. During that procedure, the athlete suffered an internal hemorrhage and respiratory failure, requiring doctors to induce a medical coma to save his life. Following his recovery, Saleta became a prominent ambassador for transplantology in Poland, participating regularly in awareness initiatives such as “Bieg po Nowe Życie.” Looking ahead to the next event organized by the initiative, Saleta stated in the video announcement that he will participate from a different perspective, attending as a prospective recipient and a dialyzed individual.
