Sunday is World Coffee Day, but it is of course more fun to talk about it on a working day. After all, most coffee is consumed in the office. Even if it’s just to take a quick walk to the coffee machine. There are many myths about coffee, but there is also a lot of research into it. These are the pros and cons of your cup of tea.
Benefit: Reduced risk of heart disease
If there is one thing that is common in our rich, Western society, it is cardiovascular disease. If you drink two to four cups of coffee a day (without sugar and milk), your risk of heart disease would be 10 percent lower. The same goes for strokes. The great thing is that this also applies to decaffeine.
Disadvantage: also an increased risk of heart disease
It’s a bit crazy, but at the same time, a disadvantage of coffee is that it also increases the risk of heart disease. That has everything to do with the amount you consume. If you drink more than 6 a day, you suddenly have a 22 percent higher risk of heart disease. That is why it is said that you should not exceed 6 cups per day.
Disadvantage: it gives you a headache
If you drink too much coffee, which can be more than two cups a day, the risk of headaches, dizziness, palpitations and trembling increases. This is because you experience more effects from caffeine because you have consumed more of it.
Advantage and disadvantage: you can’t sleep
Some people have to stop consuming this divine drink after 4 o’clock in the afternoon, otherwise they won’t sleep a wink. Indeed, it is generally not a positive thing that caffeine has this bad effect, but it can also be positive. If you have to drive a long way in the evening, it is positive to be awake and alert: then a cup of coffee is ideal. Need a shot quickly? Then choose a double espresso.
Advantage: it makes you happier
Caffeine stimulates the production of serotonin and dopamine, which means that it will make you feel happier faster. If you want to prevent depression, you would do well to drink four or five cups of coffee a day: you will then be 20 percent less likely to develop depression.
Disadvantage: it gives you a higher stress level
It can sometimes help you focus a little more because it contains caffeine, but at the same time, coffee can also cause you to experience more stress. This is because the release of cortisol can increase by drinking coffee. Moreover, a high cortisol level is not desirable in any case: it increases your risk of becoming overweight.
Advantage: less chance of type 2 diabetes
If you drink a cup of coffee every day, you have a 7 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. However, as a heavy coffee drinker you do even better: if you drink more coffee, the risk of type 2 diabetes can even be halved. What exactly the ‘sweet spot’ is is unknown, besides the fact that you should of course keep the disadvantages of drinking a lot of coffee in mind, but coffee has a very positive effect on preventing type 2 diabetes for as long as possible.
Disadvantage: it does not moisturize
Of course, coffee is liquid and you would think that you are doing a good job of drinking ‘water’, but that is not the case. It does not hydrate, so the motto – very Italian – is to drink a glass of water with every cup of coffee. Although it is a myth that coffee removes water from your body, it does not add it, which is up to you to decide separately.
Advantage: it makes you live longer
It doesn’t matter whether you drink decaffeinated, ground or instant coffee: you have a chance of living a longer life. This would be as much as 11 to 27 percent. This comes from a fairly impressive study that took 12.5 years to complete and was conducted among almost 450,000 people.
In short, enough ammunition for a healthy discussion about this cup of comfort. But be careful: enjoy it, but drink it in moderation.
