New ‘Project Hail Mary’ Trailer Reveals Focus on Unexpected Interstellar Friendship
Los Angeles, CA – A newly released trailer for MGM’s Project Hail Mary offers a deeper look into the film, revealing its core isn’t just a thrilling solo mission in space, but a story centered on an unlikely friendship between a human astronaut and an alien. Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the movie is based on the acclaimed novel by Andy Weir, author of The Martian.
While the initial premise of a lone astronaut using science to solve a global crisis initially drew comparisons to The Martian, the latest trailer emphasizes the burgeoning relationship between Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, and an alien named Rocky. The trailer showcases the challenges of dialog and the potential for collaboration between two vastly different beings facing a shared threat.
The trailer builds on the tease from the first trailer, showing more of the interaction between Grace and Rocky. The film explores fundamental questions: How do you establish trust with an alien species? What happens when you can’t understand each other? Can cooperation overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles? These themes were central to Weir’s novel, and appear to be faithfully translated to the screen.
Project Hail Mary, adapted by Drew Goddard, also stars Sandra Hüller, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub. The film is slated for release on March 20. Lord and Miller’s previous feature film was 2014’s 22 Jump Street. If they capture “even half of the magic” of the source material, according to Gizmodo, Project Hail Mary could be among the best films of next year.
