Project Hail Mary: Ryan Gosling Film Opens to $77M+ at Box Office
Ryan Gosling’s latest film, “Project Hail Mary,” has launched to a domestic box office of over $77 million, exceeding industry projections and marking a significant win for Amazon MGM Studios. The film, a science fiction drama directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, follows an astronaut’s mission to save Earth and his unexpected alliance with an alien life form.
The opening weekend performance included $12 million from Thursday previews and a further $21.1 million on Friday, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter. The film’s success is also reflected in its ‘A’ CinemaScore, indicating strong audience approval. “Project Hail Mary” now stands as one of only three non-sequel, non-franchise films in the last decade to debut with a domestic opening weekend exceeding $70 million, joining Chris Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Jordan Peele’s “Us” in that exclusive group.
The strong performance of “Project Hail Mary” also appears to have bolstered the overall box office, which is currently charting 91% ahead of the same period last year. This positive trend suggests a continuing recovery for the theatrical exhibition sector.
Elsewhere at the box office, Radio Silence’s horror-comedy “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” opened to $9 million, slightly below expectations, even as the Indian action-thriller “Dhurandhar: The Revenge,” starring Ranveer Singh, secured third place with $10.5 million. Disney’s “Hoppers” maintained its position in second place, earning $20.5 million. “Reminders of Him” rounded out the top five, adding $8.7 million to its total despite a 52% drop in its second weekend.
The success of “Project Hail Mary” is particularly notable for Amazon MGM Studios, as highlighted by The New York Times, representing a much-needed hit for the studio. The film’s worldwide opening exceeded $140 million, according to reports from Deadline.
