Progressive Sunrise Movement Co-Founder Wins Michigan Democratic House Primary

William Lawrence, a co-founder of the progressive Sunrise Movement, defeated former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink and former Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam in the Democratic primary for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District on Tuesday. The victory marks a major milestone for the progressive insurgent wing within the Democratic Party, positioning Lawrence to face Republican nominee Tom Barrett in November.

A Contentious Three-Way Primary in Lansing

The primary contest for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, anchored in Lansing, drew national attention as a high-stakes battleground. Lawrence emerged victorious over a field that included establishment-backed contenders Bridget Brink, a former diplomat, and Matt Maasdam, a retired naval officer. The seat was previously held by Democrat Elissa Slotkin, who vacated the post to successfully run for the United States Senate in 2024. Following Slotkin’s departure, Republican Tom Barrett won the open race and is currently seeking his second term in Congress, running unopposed in the Republican primary.

With Lawrence securing the Democratic nomination, the district sets up a stark partisan and ideological contest for the general election.

The Progressive Insurgency and National Reactions

Lawrence’s primary win arrives amidst a broader wave of progressive campaigns challenging party norms across the country. Mike Marinella, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), addressed the outcome in a statement to digital media following the race. According to Marinella, every defeat of an establishment candidate leaves Democrats with a radical socialist nominee, depleted campaign funds, and a difficult path toward reclaiming a House majority.

While the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) did not issue an endorsement in the Lansing race, Lawrence boasts high-profile backing from prominent democratic socialists. His campaign received endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Rashida Tlaib, a Michigan Democrat and DSA member known for her outspoken political stances.

Foundational Roots of the Sunrise Movement

Lawrence co-founded the Sunrise Movement in 2017 as a youth-focused climate activist organization. The group initially gained prominence by organizing protests and lobbying lawmakers alongside congressional progressives in support of the Green New Deal. Over the years, the organization’s platform has expanded beyond environmental policy to encompass broader progressive goals, including calls to remove Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from American cities and proposals to abolish traditional policing structures, according to the group’s official public platform.

These policy positions provide sharp contrast points for the upcoming general election campaign against Barrett.

Lawrence now enters a competitive general election phase against a sitting military veteran in a district that remains a top target for both national parties. House Republicans view the outcome as an opportunity to secure an advantage in their nationwide effort to retain control of the House of Representatives.
