Private Schools Dominate National Exam Rankings in Portugal as Public Schools Lead in Overachievement

Private Schools Dominate National Exam Rankings in Portugal as Public Schools Lead in Overachievement

October 30, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Private schools across Portugal have reclaimed the top positions in the national secondary school exam rankings released on October 30, 2026, while public institutions demonstrate stronger performance when evaluated against socioeconomic context, rtp.pt reported.

Private Institutions Dominate the Upper Tiers of Exam Rankings

The Grande Colégio Universal in Porto secured the leading position on the national list with an average score of 16.82, according to data compiled by the newspaper Público and the Católica Porto Business School. Close behind, the Colégio Nossa Senhora do Rosário in Porto achieved second place with 16.53, while the Colégio Efanor in Matosinhos took third. The Grande Colégio Universal led the table for the second year, recording an average of 16.93 across 231 exams in 16 subjects. Public institutions remain absent from the top tier, with the highest-ranked public school appearing at position 38. That designation belongs to the Escola Secundária de Monção in Viana do Castelo, which recorded an average of 14.08, according to rtp.pt. In the previous academic cycle, the top public school occupied the 33rd position in the national compilation.

Private Schools Outscore Public Institutions in National Exams

A total of 563 schools entered the evaluation, encompassing both public and private networks. Out of nearly 158,000 exams administered across the country, public schools accounted for 140,866 tests, whereas private colleges administered 16,994, as detailed by rtp.pt. Average scores remained relatively stable compared to previous results, showing slight upward adjustments. Private colleges registered a mean score of 14.15, while public institutions recorded an average of 11.83. Specific subject performance revealed a stark divergence between disciplines. The national average for the Portuguese exam increased, whereas the mathematics exam average dropped significantly, falling from 13.25 to 11.25 values.

Public Schools Lead the Socioeconomic Value-Added Table

A secondary ranking system, designated as the value-added table by Público and the Católica Porto Business School, evaluates schools by comparing actual exam performance against expected outcomes based on external factors. For public institutions, these factors include the socioeconomic context of families, whereas private colleges are assessed on whether they receive state funding. Under these adjusted criteria, the results invert significantly. The Escola Secundária de Vouzela in Viseu secured the top position in this category. Students at Vouzela achieved an average of 13.65, surpassing the projected benchmark of 11.06. This evaluation incorporates variables such as average student age, parental education levels, and the percentage of students receiving state social support through the School Social Action program. Within the top 50 value-added rankings, public institutions claim 38 spots, while private colleges account for 12.

Northern Region Dominates High Academic Performance Metrics

Geographic analysis indicates a pronounced concentration of high-performing academic results in the northern region of the country. Among the 223 schools achieving performance metrics above the national average, 61.9 percent operate in the northern districts. Specialized arts institutions also feature prominently among top public establishments. Alongside the Escola Artística do Conservatório de Música do Porto, which ranked 38th overall with an average of 14.01 across 121 exams, other prominent arts schools such as the Soares des Reis in Porto and the António Arroio in Lisbon placed in upper tiers.

Private Colleges Occupy Most Top 50 Rankings

Within a universe comprising 479 public schools and 91 private institutions, the top 50 overall ranking included four public schools and 46 private colleges, restricted to facilities administering the eight most popular examinations. Among public establishments, the previous year’s leading school attained an average of 13.85. Additional institutions occupying upper placements included the Colégio D. Diogo de Sousa, the Colégio de S. Tomás in Lisbon, the Salesianos de Lisboa – Colégio Oficinas de São José, the Colégio Nova Encosta in Paços de Ferreira, and the Colégio da Rainha Santa Isabel in Coimbra. Further down the national table, subsequent positions featured Filipa de Lencastre in Lisbon in second place, followed by the secondary schools of Monção, Alves Martins in Viseu, Eça de Queirós in Póvoa de Varzim, the Colégio Militar in Lisbon, the Pintor José de Brito secondary school in Viana do Castelo, and Martinho Árias in Soure in 10th place. For internal assessment comparisons, the Escola de Paços de Ferreira recorded that 33.7 percent of its maximum grades of 20 were awarded to students receiving School Social Action support, followed by Amarante at 32.9 percent, Camilo Castelo Branco in Vila Nova de Famalicão at 22.4 percent, the Escola Secundária de Penafiel at 21.6 percent, and the Escola Secundária de Fafe at 21.1 percent. In a southern school located on the south bank of the Tagus River, the average reached 7.09 values, where a majority of pupils receive School Social Action assistance and only half finish secondary education within a three-year span.
