Princess Astrid passed away peacefully on Friday, September 11, 2026, according to the official statement released by the Norwegian Royal House. Her death occurred mere days after she joined relatives and foreign royals at Oslo Cathedral on Wednesday, September 9, to lay her younger brother, King Harald V, to rest. King Harald had died on August 28, 2026.
Having experienced health problems in recent months, the princess arrived at the cathedral in a wheelchair. That appearance ultimately marked her final public farewell. Earlier in the week, the palace released photographs of Astrid visiting her brother’s coffin in the Palace Chapel, capturing her sitting quietly beside the casket and looking out at the floral tributes left by mourners in Palace Square.
Following King Harald’s death, Princess Astrid had become the last surviving child of King Olav V and Crown Princess Märtha. Their older sister, Princess Ragnhild, died in 2012.

State Mourning and Institutional Continuity
King Haakon ordered the flag above the Royal Palace balcony to be flown at half-mast on Friday, and it will be lowered again on the day of Princess Astrid’s funeral. Details regarding the upcoming state ceremony have not yet been released by the palace.
