Prince Harry and Prince William Support Separate London Charity Galas
Prince Harry made a surprise appearance at a black-tie gala supporting Ukraine at the Imperial War Museum in central London on Thursday night, while his estranged brother, Prince William, addressed guests virtually at a charity ball just six miles away.
Prince Harry Arrives at the United for Freedom Gala in Central London
“I have seen something in Ukraine that makes it impossible for me to look away,” Prince Harry said during his speech at the United for Freedom gala. The Duke of Sussex arrived at the venue wearing a tuxedo, accompanied by his bodyguard, and smiled and waved to photographers.
The event raised funds for organizations supporting Ukraine as the conflict entered its fourth year. During his remarks, Harry highlighted the historic links between Britain and Ukraine, drawing on experiences from his recent visits to the war-torn country. He praised Ukrainians for defending the frontline while maintaining businesses and schools, as well as for developing technology that changes modern warfare.
“Their resilience should never become an excuse for the rest of us to tolerate their suffering,” Harry told the audience. “Ukrainians should not have to prove, year after year, just how much they can endure. Their courage deserves more than our admiration. It deserves our resolve.”
Prince William Delivers Virtual Address at the Bowelbabe Fund Rebel Ball
Meanwhile, across the capital at Fulham’s Hurlingham Club, the Prince of Wales appeared via a pre-recorded video message at the inaugural Bowelbabe Fund Rebel Ball. The event took place on what would have been campaigner Dame Deborah James’s 45th birthday. William had spent the day in Wales before addressing the crowd supporting the charity founded by Dame Deborah, who died from bowel cancer in June 2022.
“Tonight is about honouring the legacy of Dame Deborah James, an amazing woman who achieved and continued to achieve so much in pursuit of saving and improving lives,” William said in his video message. The heir to the throne recalled presenting Dame Deborah with her damehood in her parents’ garden in 2022. He praised her positivity and humor in the face of adversity, noting her preferred term, “rebellious hope.” The gala raised money for both the Bowelbabe Fund and Cancer Research UK.
Commercial Ventures and Royal Diary Clashes in Late August and October
The simultaneous London engagements highlight the separate public schedules maintained by the brothers following Harry and Meghan’s return to the UK in late August. Earlier on Thursday, Meghan launched a £112 ($148) advent calendar in her first commercial venture since relocating. The 24-piece gourmet chocolate collection draws inspiration from her Montecito home and garden, featuring a festive illustration of the £11 million mansion where she and Harry lived for six years.
While Harry focused on his charitable work during his public appearance, William concentrated on domestic medical research fundraising.
Public Reactions and Diverging Priorities Across the Capital
The geographical proximity of the two royal events highlighted the ongoing distance between the brothers. While Harry addressed geopolitical conflict and humanitarian aid, William honored a domestic cancer campaigner whose foundation continues to invest in pioneering research to give patients more time with their families.
“I know she would have wanted everyone dancing, celebrating and making memories,” William said of Dame Deborah James as guests gathered at the Hurlingham Club.
