Prime Video streams Carrie and Crystal Lake, Pagina 12 reports

November 2, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Prime Video made available two horror television series, Carrie and Crystal Lake, which revisit the horror classics through the perspective of the mother figure, Pagina 12 reported on November 2, 2026.

    Key Clinical Takeaways:

  • Amazon’s Prime Video hosts both series, featuring original creations by Mike Flanagan and Brad Kane alongside directors Kyra Sedgwick, Kate Siegel, Logan George, Celine Held, and Michael Lennox.
  • The narrative focus centers on maternal figures, contrasting Brian De Palma’s 1976 Carrie with Sean Cunningham’s 1980 Friday the 13th.
  • The casts include Summer H. Howell, Samantha Sloyan, Alison Thornton, Matthew Lillard, Linda Cardellini, William Catlett, Gwendolyn Sundstrom, and Cameron Scoggins.

Both television projects examine the archetype of the psychopathic or grieving mother educating children under extreme circumstances. The approach mirrors the lineage established by Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film Psycho, which subsequently birthed the giallo and slasher subgenres, launching a parade of knives into an endless puzzle of macabre crimes. While the original 1976 feature Carrie drew directly from Stephen King’s novel to depict a fanatical religious mother played by Piper Laurie, the contemporary streaming version shifts the dynamic. Creator Mike Flanagan constructs a more rational maternal antagonist portrayed by Samantha Sloyan, who addresses school administrators with calculated arguments while her daughter Carrie, played by Summer H. Howell, navigates isolation, online harassment, and eventual telekinetic retaliation.

In this new version, Carrie moves between affection and anger toward her mother and friends. Locked in her house and released to the world following the death of her father—whose symbolic fall serves as the motive that sparks everything else—Carrie must face an unprepared world in her innocence. Flanagan shows this through the use of social media, an alterity for which adults are equally unprepared. Within the divided reality of social networks, everyone becomes fodder for public ridicule, increasing the hostility toward Carrie as a scapegoat that deflects attention from others. From this premise, the series achieves notable situations through a contemporary update that also provides a piercing look at the advance of technologies within the school system, an avalanche that seems impossible to stop. When the moment arrives, Carrie’s fury, bathed in pig blood, explodes to sweep away everything. The character’s telekinesis links several issues in the series, including witchcraft as well as elements tied to superhero cinema and franchises; final chapters hint at this, leaving the interesting premise trapped within the possibilities of continuing or expanding a thematic universe. Beyond this, the image of a mistreated child persists, featuring a notable scene when she asks her mother for help from a pain she no longer knows how to handle.

Linda Cardellini portrays a sympathetic Pamela Voorhees

The series examines the early days of Jason Voorhees and his mother, Pamela Voorhees, situated near the campground that defines the 1980 slasher milestone, itself an opportunistic and unsophisticated film prompted by John Carpenter’s 1978 movie Halloween. Linda Cardellini portrays Pamela Voorhees, shifting the characterization from the original film toward a more sympathetic portrait of a grieving parent. The narrative explores the initial killings committed in defense of her son following his drowning accident, incorporating period elements of adolescent drug use and casual sex into the back story.

What remains undetermined is whether either television adaptation will secure subsequent seasonal renewals beyond their initial runs, or how far the expanded thematic universes will ultimately extend.
