The Premiere Cinema 14 at Orlando Fashion Square Mall will close its doors on March 12, marking the end of a long-standing entertainment option for residents and a significant loss for the mall itself.
Operated by Premiere Cinemas, the 14-screen theater had develop into one of the mall’s key anchors, particularly as other traditional department stores have scaled back or closed locations, according to reports. The closure also leaves a gap in the local market for more affordable moviegoing, as Premiere Cinema 14 offered a lower-cost alternative to other first-run film venues in the Orlando area.
The decision to close the theater comes as the retail landscape continues to evolve, with malls facing increasing pressure from online shopping and changing consumer habits. Orlando Fashion Square, like many similar malls across the country, has been working to adapt to these changes by incorporating more experiential retail and entertainment options.
While the exact reasons for Premiere Cinemas’ decision were not immediately available, the closure aligns with a broader trend of movie theater closures, particularly within enclosed malls. The Business Journals reported on the impending closure earlier this month, signaling the end of a significant entertainment draw for the mall.
The closure of the Orlando Fashion Square location does not appear to be part of a wider shutdown of Premiere Cinemas locations. A recent article highlighted a Premiere Cinema in Lubbock, Texas, hosting special horror film screenings in January, demonstrating continued operation at other sites.
Wolfgang Premiere Lounge, an elevated cinema experience located within a mall setting, offers a contrasting model to the traditional Premiere Cinema format. Although, it is not located at Orlando Fashion Square. The future of the space occupied by Premiere Cinema 14 at Orlando Fashion Square remains uncertain and mall management has not yet announced plans for its redevelopment.
