Mendoza Province Extends Deadline for Maternal RSV Vaccination
Pregnant individuals in Mendoza Province have two more months to receive a crucial vaccine protecting their newborns from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).The vaccination, now part of the national vaccine calendar, is free and available at all health centers, hospitals, and through mobile vaccination services.
RSV poses a significant threat to infants under one year old, especially during winter months. The vaccine works by transferring antibodies from the pregnant person to the baby, both through the placenta and via breastfeeding, offering protection during the first year of life. Authorities report that vaccination between 32 and 36 weeks of gestation is recommended, and a new dose shoudl be administered with each pregnancy. Recent studies indicate a 70% reduction in intensive therapy admissions for babies under one year old with respiratory conditions linked to the vaccine.
The vaccination aims to protect newborns and infants against severe acute respiratory infections caused by RSV. Circulation of the virus is highest during winter, with the most vulnerable populations being babies under one year and older adults. A single dose is required for each pregnancy. The vaccine’s inclusion in the national calendar ensures accessibility and affordability for all pregnant individuals in the province.
