Prabowo Subianto: Vision for Indonesia, Diplomacy & Challenges

March 21, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has signaled a firm commitment to fiscal discipline, stating he would only consider temporarily exceeding the nation’s statutory budget deficit cap in the event of a “very big emergency,” according to a recent interview with Bloomberg News. The statement, made on March 14, 2026, from his hilltop estate in Hambalang, West Java, comes as Prabowo faces scrutiny from both domestic tycoons and international market observers regarding his economic policies.

Prabowo specifically cited a sustained period of elevated oil prices, potentially triggered by the ongoing US-Israel war in Iran, as the primary condition that would necessitate breaching the 3 percent of GDP deficit limit. “Unless there’s a very big emergency like Covid,” he said, the legally mandated cap would remain in place. This position reflects a cautious approach to government spending, emphasizing the need for Indonesia to “live within our means.”

The President’s residence in Hambalang, described as a sprawling estate overlooking rolling green hills, offers a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Jakarta, located approximately an hour’s drive north. The property, adorned with military artifacts including swords, spears, rifles, and photographs, as well as equine imagery, underscores Prabowo’s background and interests.

While maintaining fiscal conservatism, Prabowo also outlined plans to eliminate costly fuel subsidies over the next three years, proposing to replace them with 100 gigawatts of solar power. “We cannot survive on subsidies in the long run,” he stated. He expressed confidence in his administration’s ability to avoid raising fuel prices, but acknowledged it would be “very tricky” if oil were to exceed $120 per barrel for a prolonged period.

Prabowo also defended his signature free meals program, which currently accounts for 11 percent of the central government’s budget, calling it “a stimulus for growth.” This program, and the President’s overall economic vision, have drawn attention from international figures. In November 2025, Prabowo met with American business magnate Michael Bloomberg at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, alongside Danantara CEO Rosan Roeslani and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia. The meeting, a follow-up to discussions held in New York the previous September, focused on potential cooperation in education, health, and marine conservation, as well as possible partnerships between Bloomberg’s and Danantara’s trust funds.

Discussions with Bloomberg also touched on economic and investment opportunities, including downstreaming and renewable energy, though details remain under exploration. The administration has not yet confirmed any specific commitments from Bloomberg regarding energy-sector projects. Further talks are scheduled to take place at Danantara’s offices.
