Portugal is currently grappling with nine significant fires, mobilizing 2,731 operational personnel and 881 land vehicles. The most concerning blazes are located in Penamacor, Arouca, and Santarém, where populations are at risk, according to Civil Protection.

Commander Elísio Pereira of the National Emergency and Civil Protection authority explained that the presence of at-risk populations necessitates the dispersion of resources to prevent fires from reaching residential areas. This strategic deployment, while crucial for safety, also complicates direct firefighting efforts.

In Penamacor, up to two groups specializing in combating urban fires, each comprising 30 personnel, have been mobilized as a preventative measure, though their intervention is not yet required.

Pereira assured that, for the time being, there has been no need to evacuate residents from nearby villages.

Regarding the reinforcement of firefighting resources, Civil Protection does not anticipate an increase in personnel or vehicles, as the current numbers have already been augmented.

earlier in the day, over 2,700 personnel, supported by more than 600 vehicles, were engaged in combating 17 high-risk forest fires. This update was provided by the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (Anepc) at it’s headquarters, with National Commander of Emergency and Civil Protection, Mário Silvestre, reporting that 20 individuals had received assistance.

One fire in Alchede, Santarém, tragically impacted livestock, resulting in animal fatalities.

Anepc also highlighted fires in Lindoso, which is advancing towards Serra Amarela, and Arouca, which poses a threat to the villages of Castelo de Paiva and Arouca.

Civil Protection expressed hope that firefighting efforts in Penamacor and Nisa would see favorable progress overnight.

Commander Elísio Pereira noted that lower temperatures are expected to aid in controlling some of the active fires. However, he cautioned that difficult access at night could hinder efforts in areas already considerably affected by fire.
