Portland’s Unique Animal Yoga: Beyond Goats & Kittens | Classes & Trends
Portland, Oregon – Yoga classes in Portland have taken a decidedly scaled turn, moving beyond puppies and into the realm of reptiles. HISSS, a reptile-centered pet store, began offering “Snake Yoga” classes earlier this year and demand is exceeding expectations.
The classes, held in the store’s front room, involve participants performing yoga poses while carpet pythons and other snakes are present, sometimes draped around their necks or shoulders. Dru Morales, owner of HISSS, initially conceived of the idea after opening the store last year to provide specialized reptile care services, including shell waxing for turtles, and tortoises. “We offer beak trimming services for turtles and tortoises, nail clippings, spa packages,” Morales said, outlining the range of services available. “Shedding assistance, a turtle and tortoise shell wax service…”
The yoga sessions are led by Katy Vanek, a yoga instructor who had no prior experience with snakes before partnering with HISSS. The store’s staff are responsible for handling the snakes during the classes, adhering to protocols designed to ensure the safety of both participants and the animals. These protocols include evaluations and cleanings before and after handling, as well as monitoring the snakes for signs of stress, according to HISSS.
The popularity of Snake Yoga reflects a broader trend of animal-assisted yoga classes, though it represents a significant departure from more common offerings featuring goats, kittens, or puppies. According to HISSS, the classes typically draw a crowd that is approximately 80% snake enthusiasts and 20% individuals seeking exposure therapy or attending with hesitant family members.
The emergence of Snake Yoga follows a period where animal yoga classes have become increasingly common. Classes featuring dogs, goats, and even reindeer have been reported in various locations, suggesting a growing interest in combining animal interaction with wellness practices. However, HISSS’s offering appears to be unique in its focus on reptiles.
As of March 15, 2026, HISSS reports that Snake Yoga classes are selling out quickly. The store has not announced any plans to expand the number of classes offered, but continues to monitor demand.
