Port of San Diego Recognized for Sustainable Commuting Practices
The Port of San Diego has been awarded Platinum-tier recognition by the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) in its annual Diamond Awards program for the fourth year in a row. The awards celebrate employers who actively promote and support sustainable commuting options for their workforce. The Port received the honor at a ceremony held September 17th at the SANDAG Boardroom.
SANDAG’s Employer Commuter Program provides organizations with free assistance in developing strategies to reduce single-occupancy vehicle trips and improve regional air quality. The Platinum designation represents the program’s highest level of achievement.
“This recognition from SANDAG underscores the Port’s dedication to environmental stewardship,” stated Danielle Moore, Chair of the Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “we are committed to reducing emissions and protecting San Diego Bay and surrounding communities by encouraging sustainable transportation choices for our employees.”
The Port’s comprehensive commuter program includes a hybrid remote work policy, on-site electric vehicle charging stations, and a 100% reimbursement program for employees utilizing alternatives to driving alone. This reimbursement covers the full cost of options like carpooling, vanpooling, and public transportation, including monthly passes for buses, trolleys, and trains.
Regular employee surveys are also conducted to continually refine and improve the program’s offerings. These efforts directly support the Port’s clean air goals and contribute to the implementation of the Maritime Clean Air Strategy (MCAS), a long-term plan focused on improving air quality and public health around San Diego Bay while maintaining efficient maritime operations.
The award was announced during the Port’s annual Green port Month, a celebration of its environmental achievements and ongoing sustainability initiatives.
