Popov Says He Is Here to Win Arctic Open Title
Lee Zii Jia and Christo Popov have both secured their places in the Arctic Open quarter-finals at the Energia Arena in Vantaa, Finland, heading into their meeting with different expectations, according to a report.
Popov Chases First Title While Acknowledging Wide-Open Field
World No. 2 Christo Popov made his title ambitions clear following his 21-14, 21-19 victory over India’s Tharun Mannepalli. The Frenchman, who claimed the 2025 European singles and doubles titles, stated in a post-match interview with Badminton Europe that he is in Vantaa to win the tournament. Popov acknowledged that the path remains difficult and that the men’s singles field is wide open.
Popov admitted that world rankings do not always reflect the true current form of athletes on tour. Pointing out that many matches on the circuit operate on a fifty-fifty basis, the second seed emphasized taking the competition strictly match by match.
The upcoming match presents a direct historical hurdle for the French competitor. Popov has never defeated Lee Zii Jia in previous encounters, having suffered a first-round defeat to the Malaysian player at the 2024 edition of the Arctic Open.
Zii Jia Focuses on Restoring Confidence After Difficult Run
Lee Zii Jia advanced to the quarter-finals following a 21-17, 21-12 win against Taiwan’s Su Li-yang. Despite holding positive memories of Vantaa after capturing the tournament title in 2023, the world No. 56 adopted a cautious outlook for the remainder of the event.

Detailing a challenging period over the past two seasons, Lee explained that his primary objective centers on rebuilding his competitive confidence step by step rather than immediately targeting the championship trophy.
