Barth Firefighters Face Obstruction and Abuse
Interior Minister Christian Pegel expressed shock and condemnation following reports that volunteer firefighters in Barth were hindered and verbally assaulted while responding to an emergency call.
“I am shaken by the behavior of individual people who insulted firefighters in Barth during a mission,” stated Minister Pegel. “This behavior is in no way excusable. Firefighters put their own safety in acute emergencies to help other people. Whoever disabled or even insulted them acts disrespectfully, but also endangers human life.”
Pegel emphasized the vital role of volunteer fire brigades, stating, “Our voluntary fire brigades are the backbone of the fire and disaster protection in our country. Without the many thousands of volunteers, fast help in emergencies would simply not be possible. This commitment deserves our greatest recognition, support and, above all, respect. It is indeed a volunteer that is not a matter of course. Take 24 hours a day for all of us.”
