The match marks the first competitive meeting between the two nations at the World Championship level in over four decades.
Poland, currently ranked number one by the FIVB, aims to advance from Group A, which also includes Qatar and the Netherlands, to the playoff phase of the tournament. Romania, ranked 22nd, has shown recent progress, including a notable upset victory over France at the 2023 European Championships where they reached the quarter-finals.
Historically, Poland and Romania have met eight times in World Championship competition, with Poland holding a 5-3 advantage in overall wins (17 sets to 14). Past results include a 1-3 loss in 1949, victories in 1956 (3-1) and 1974 (3-0), and a 3-0 win in their last encounter in 1982. A particularly memorable, though ultimately unsuccessful, clash occurred at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, where Poland lost the bronze medal match to Romania 1-3.
